Brazilian translator serving in PNG?

Dear Friends and Family,

Our trip to Nashville and Kentucky went very well. Thank you for your prayers. We had a great celebration of Lynee’s birthday. Her sister surprised her by coming from Chicago. We also enjoyed our vacation at a nice cabin (see http://bit.ly/cR_AW for photos). A couple of weeks after we returned, we celebrated our 16th anniversary.

Below is an encouraging report of how the church in a country that has traditionally received missionaries (Brazil) has started sending missionaries too. Following that is our personal update.

Warm welcome: Papua New Guinea

“Today is a beautiful day, the Day of the Lord, we are glad to welcome you to our beautiful Nawabu...” This welcome song was sung enthusiastically by the community waiting to see Erika Cavalcante arrive on their shores. Thank the Lord for the warm welcome extended by the Nawabu villagers to Erika, from ALEM in Brazil. She is the first Latin American to join the Bible Translation Association, which represents a partnership between the church of Papua New Guinea and Brazil. Pray for Erika as she continues to build relationships, begin language learning, and make adjustments to living in the village.

Personal Update

Thank you for praying for Lynee's upcoming teacher orientation. There are now 22 registered participants, which is a good number of people to work with. Please pray for the staff as they continue to prepare. Lynee has been working long hours to finish all the printed materials and logistics. Pray that, instead of feeling overwhelmed, she will have peace by trusting God for the completion of all that’s needed. Please also pray that the teachers will be well prepared to serve missionary families overseas. The orientation is June 24-29.

I’ve been working on some technical issues in our fonts. We want the more advanced features in the fonts to work in the Firefox browser so that Scripture with complex characters can be published on the Web. When that browser was finally upgraded so that the features should have worked, they didn’t. The reason has to do with how technical standards develop over time. We’re trying to change the fonts so they will work. Please pray as we decide on the best way to do this.

Before our trip in May, we had to deal with a medical issue. Lynee discovered a lump in her right breast. After a visit to our doctor, she went to Baylor medical center for a sonogram, which led to a tissue biopsy. We were very grateful to God that the lump was benign. Of course, the testing was expensive. Most of the bills haven’t yet come, but the insurance website indicates that our costs will be over $1,200.
